Data collection was carried out in Tigray between October 2024 and March 2025, through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 60 individuals, including trafficking survivors (n=8), family members of victims (n=4), eyewitnesses from border communities (n=13), legal professionals (n=25), and law enforcement officials (n=10). In addition, field observations (n=12) were also undertaken at known trafficking hotspots and border towns, and sites of destroyed refugee camps and registered in a form of diary notes. The data collection in Tigray was carried out by Daniel Tesfa, with a help of fieldwork assistants. The in-depth interviews were collected in Tigrinya language, and subsequently transcribed and translated into English. The interviews were registered in excel sheet and each participant was assigned a unique identifier to ensure anonymity. An open coding was used for qualitative analysis which then grouped emerging themes and sub-themes that are presented in this chapter. The themes focused on modus operandi of trafficking networks and new emerging routes. Subsequently, sub-themes emerged within each theme pointing towards the commonalities and differences across different routes which enabled to map each of the identified routes accordingly.
